Dakar Rally…

This page introduces the Dakar Rally and my 24 bits of Dakar Data – Scroll down for latest posts…

The desire to compete in the Dakar Rally has has come and gone since my teen age years when I first saw images of lone bikers, or cars and trucks tearing through desert tracks, over enormous sand dunes and across massive vistas from aerial helicopter shots. The courage, determination and stamina of the participants to get through thousands of kilometers of the most difficult terrain, day after day for 14 days whilst struggling with navigation, mechanical issues, altitude, heat and exhaustion is awe-inspiring. This blog is my 24 step plan to get me into the Dakar….

Update 18/03/2010

My friend (and blog subscriber!) Becky sent me a great link to the Big Picture Dakar Article and as a picture equals a thousand words etc…Check them out – they are really cool and really show the drama, magnitude and flavour of the Dakar in South America.

This picture scares/excites me the most even (though it’s a car and not a bike) it sums up the dramatic routes and skill needed to survive the Dakar when you are driving down near vertical mountain sides!

Big balls are needed to roll down hills like this!

How exciting/terrifying/awesome/inspiring is this? (Delete as appropriate!)

Nice Pic, but yes, very scary!

Can anyone tell me when they release a detailed route map of the rally? I have seen the map on the official website, but it doesn’t give much detail.
I wrote the people at dakar.com, but they didn’t respond.

I live in Argentina and would like to see the competition from somewhere a bit more remote than Mar Del Plata!

Hi Keith
Thanks for your comment.

I guess you’ve seen the link on the Dakar site – http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/docs/parcours-carte.pdf

This is as detailed as it gets at the moment – I think they keep it deliberately vague to avoid too much route recce’ing.

Where are you in Argentina?
I will be passing back through in 2012 at some point on a trip around South America so could look you up to swap Dakar stories! :-)

Nice work, has the race location been decided for 2012 yet? I heard the UAE were interested

Good point Rob – I’m not sure where 2012 will be – I heard it may go back to Africa next year but I’ll have to confirm….

Hi Andrew
She does now! ;-)
Actually she’s very supportive as she knows it’s a passion of mine that stops me getting completely sucked into the corporate world!….
